15: Numbers

Emily Bazelon writes about the Self-Employed Depression in the New York Times Sunday Magazine.

Unemployment now stands at 9.4%

If you include laid-off workers who have simply given up looking for jobs or have settled for part-time work, the level stands at 16.4 percent.

If you include people who were being paid $65,000 at a full-time job with benefits, got laid off, and then managed to find a full-time job paying minimum wage with no health care or retirement plan. . . well, who knows where that number stands.

I like the headline the Foreign Policy blog gave to this item: U.S. employment cratering at a less breakneck speed.
