Among the 53 people laid off at the Tribune yesterday is — wait for it — the man who wrote their "Recession Diaries" blog, a first-person account of the economic downturn.
He wanted to post one final entry on losing his own job, but management took it down.
Also among those laid off yesterday is a woman I hold in the highest possible regard. She was a grad school professor of mine. Shortly after I graduated, she left the school to return to a newspaper job, her first love.
The graduate school sequence she led, which formed the basis for my master's degree, was Newspaper Management.
As a former classmate pointed out yesterday, as marketable skills go, that's roughly one notch above Telegraph Operator.
